Irazu is the highest volcano in Costa Rica. There have been
at least 23 eruptions since 1723. The most recent was from
1963 to 1965. It sent tephra and secondary mudflows into cultivated
areas, caused at least 40 deaths, and destroyed 400 houses
and some factories. That eruption had a maximum Volcanic Explosivity
Index of 3. The Global Volcanism Project was the source
of this information and contains recent information about

Pass flower and large coffee plantations as
you ascend to the slopes of Costa Rica's famous Irazu Volcano
National Park Nature lovers
can stroll through the magnificient Lankester Botanical Gardens,
and marvel at approximately 800 varieties of orchids, anthriums
and ferns. This garden has been declared a refuge for many
migratory species of birds. Ujarras overlook will be our next
stop, from which you can enjoy the spectacular view of the
imposing Orosi Valley.
After you descend, we will visit coffee and sugar cane plantations,
the Cachi Dam, and the Ujarras ruins, s Spanish church constructed
in 1754. A stop for lunch will be made (optional) at a local
restaurant.
On our return, we will visit the Basilica de los Angeles,
a traditional pilgrimage center for Costa Ricans. Irazu Volcano
