Your tour leaves early in the morning to
drive from San Jose to Cartago, the first capital of Costa
Rica. At 3432 meters (9175 feet) above sea level, the Irazu
volcano is the highest active volcano in Costa Rica. It has
an extensive record of volcanic activity, with the last violent
cycle of eruptions between 1962 and 1965.
Visit the lush Orosi Valley with its panoramic
view of the Reventazon River and the Cachi Dam, the first
modern hydroelectric project in the country. Stop at the "Mirador
de Orosi" to view the valley panorama and the Orosi church,
the oldest functioning church in the country (built in 1743)
Next visit the famous Lankaster Gardens,
one of the largest collections of orchids, bromeliads, ferns,
and anthuriums of the region. The attractive garden boasts
almost one hundred species of birds and is considered a bird
sanctuary.
